A gratin is a preparation of fish, meat, meat, vegetables,
a pasta dish or a sweet preparation on which a more
or less light, shiny and golden crust forms under the action of the heat of an oven,
especially using the broiler.

Here is the list of utensils you will need.
Hachis Parmentier:
- Preparation Tools:
- A sharp knife
- A cutting board
- A vegetable peeler
- Cooking:
- A large pot (for boiling the potatoes)
- A small pot or pan (for cooking the ground meat and onions)
- A potato masher or a pestle (if you don't have a potato masher, a fork can also do the job for mashing the potatoes)
- A large bowl (for mixing the mashed potatoes
- Assembly and Oven Cooking:
- A large baking dish
- A spatula or a large spoon for spreading the mashed potatoes and meat in the dish
- A grater (if you wish to add grated cheese on top
Chicken and Mushroom Gratin:
Preparation Tools:
- A sharp knife
- A cutting board
Cooking:
- A pan (for browning the chicken and sautéing the mushrooms)
- A pot (for preparing a béchamel or sauce, if used)
Assembly and Oven Cooking:
- A baking dish
- A spatula or a wooden spoon for mixing and spreading the ingredients in the dish
- A grater (if you wish to add grated cheese on top)
For both dishes, you will also need an oven for the final baking.
